Dimplex Remote Recall

On March 16, 2010 Dimplex North America announced a voluntary recall of approximately 5,000 plug-in remote control receivers included with certain electric fireplace models sold between 1998 and 2008 that have the potential to overheat. Dimplex customers will receive replacements free of charge. In the wake of the Toyota recalls, your first assumption might be that the company was somehow negligent in the manufacturing process to save money and/or worked to hide the malfunctions.
However, this wasn't the case here. Dimplex is a very responsible organization with an excellent reputation based on strong engineering, product development and manufacturing. It should be noted that the remote control receivers involved in this recall were Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) approved. UL is an "Independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization" which has strong credibility testing products for public safety. We are all used to seeing the familiar 'UL Approved' insignia on the electrics we use and we can only assume that an issue with the receivers developed after the rigorous testing and approval process. They have no reported injuries or damage, this recall is strictly voluntary as they are proactively being responsible.

CAMBRIDGE, Ontario — Electric fireplace source Dimplex North America is conducting a voluntary recall and replacement program involving plug-in remote control receivers in about 700,000 of its products, including some media consoles, bookcases and other furniture models.

Mass merchandise, home improvement, specialty fireplace and furniture retailers sold fireplaces, stoves and fireplace inserts that included the affected plug-in remote control between 1998 and 2008 for $199 to $1,499.

  3. Interesting article. I just now learned of this recall when I went online to search for a replacement remote box. The plug port on mine melted and I'm surprised it did not cause a fire. At first, I blamed it on the person who was using it, saying that they were running it at too high of a temp but now I know the truth. I will be contacting Dimplex tomorrow for a replacement.
